Focke-Wulf FW 56 "Stösser" Electric ARF |
 |
 |
Focke-Wulf did not produce any
notable aircraft designs in their first seven years of business. But in 1931 with the merger of Albatros-Flugzeugwerke and arrival of
Kurt Tank aircraft development improved. Kurt Tank would become one of the world's leading aeronautical engineers. The FW 56 was
the first aircraft for which Kurt Tank had full responsibility and Focke-Wulf's first single-engine monoplane. It was developed as a small
home-defense fighter but its primary role was as an advanced fighter trainer. The FW 56 had good flight characteristics and was the
first German plane to be used to demonstrate dive-bombing. About 1,000 had been produced by 1940. It was nicknamed "Falke" (falcon).
